For the past few days, I’ve been suffering from PMDD, Premenstral Dysphoric Disorder, which is similar to PMS (premenstrual syndrome) but more severe.

This condition affects women who suffer from severe depression, irritability, and tension before menstruation. I’m sure you’re saying “well, this just sounds like regular PMS symptoms.” It’s more than that. A lot of people don’t get the relation until you go through it yourself or know someone who does.

Most physicians prescribe anti-depressants to help you with the symptoms and retain balance but if you’re like me, you don’t want to do that. But I guess to keep me from popping off or jumping off a bridge, I have no other choice.

Check out this list of symptoms of PMDD and see if this is something you’re going through too!

Symptoms

  • No interest in daily activities and relationships
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Feeling of sadness or hopelessness, possible suicidal thoughts
  • Feelings of tension or anxiety
  • Feeling out of control
  • Food cravings or binge eating
  • Mood swings with periods of crying
  • Panic attacks
  • Irritability or anger that affects other people
  • Physical symptoms, such as bloating, breast tenderness, headaches, and joint or muscle pain
  • Problems sleeping
  • Trouble concentrating

Treatment

A healthy lifestyle is the first step to managing PMDD.

  • Eat healthy foods with more whole grains, vegetables, fruit, and little or no salt, sugar, alcohol, and caffeine.
  • Get regular aerobic exercise throughout the month to redue the severity of PMS symptoms.
  • If you have problems sleeping, try changing your sleep habits before taking medicines for insomnia.

Keep a diary or calendar to record:

  • The type of symptoms you are having
  • How severe they are
  • How long they last

Antidepressants may be helpful.
