Michelle Obama Speaks On Daughter Dropping “Obama” Surname
Michelle Obama recently opened up about her daughter Malia’s decision to publicly go by Malia Ann instead of using the recognizable “Obama” surname, especially after premiering her directorial debut at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Michelle shared her thoughts during an episode of the Sibling Revelry podcast hosted by Kate and Oliver Hudson.
“I mean, it is very important for my kids to feel like they’ve earned what they are getting in the world, and they don’t want people to assume that they don’t work hard,” Michelle said, emphasizing Malia’s desire to succeed on her own terms. Malia’s Sundance short film, The Heart, was credited under “Malia Ann.”
Michelle also noted that both daughters have shown independence since their teenage years, adding, “They’re very sensitive to that, they want to be their own people.” She recalled the moment Malia removed “Obama” from her credit block saying, “we respected the fact that she’s trying to make her way.”
By stepping into the spotlight at Sundance under her chosen name, Malia Ann, Malia is making a deliberate statement about separating her creative accomplishments from her family legacy. Michelle’s candid reflections highlight a proud and supportive parent, respecting her daughter’s decision to forge her own path, while still recognizing the significance of her roots.
