As the world remembers the life of President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated 50 years ago,  one of his most memorable speeches that stuck with me was his inauguration speech with popular sentence “ask not what your country could do for you, but ask what you could do for your country”.

That speech got me thinking, what can I do for my country? What can We do for our country?

Last night, I was watching the news and saw a story about a group of men who used to roam the streets of Baltimore, committing various crimes, but today they walk the streeets with a different beat. This group is called the “Safe Streets” organization.

ABC2 followed the men of Safe Streets and this is what they found:

The Safe Streets project is backed by data but maintains absolutely no relationship with police. Work is done within the code of the streets.

Each outreach worker has a caseload of up to 20 participants or high risk youth they’ve identified as catalysts for violence in the area. The targets are counseled through mediations when necessary, home visits and a steady lesson in how to live off of the streets and outside their destructive norms.

That’s one way we can do something for our country. Can you think of other ways to keep our country safe or even our streets? You say what?
