Does your boss constantly check up on you? Do they double check your work; making you think you’re not doing your job? Have you been turned down for promotions even though you and everyone else in your department know you’re more than qualified? Has your boss embarrassed you in front of other employees for self gratification? Does this sound like a scene from the movie “Horrible Bosses”?

Before you call your homeboy to come over and put some “paws” on your boss, take some time to think about how you can deal with your bullying boss!

Here are some tips:

Figure out what sets your boss off, and try to avoid doing it again. If it’s typographical errors in your work, run the spell-check before you turn in your next report. If your boss hates interruptions, find out the best time of day to approach him with questions.

Use a calm, soothing voice in response to a verbal tirade to inspire your boss to chill out. Ask him what you can do to help rectify the situation.

Be brave and confront your boss about the bullying. Plan for a time when your boss is in a good mood and address it then. Frame your criticism in terms of the boss’s behavior, not the boss himself.

DOCUMENT EVERYTHING! Make sure you have a documentation of every harassing phone call, email, text message. Make sure you have co-workers who are willing to submit a complaint on your behalf.

Have a new job lined up. Most boss-bullies still remain in power and after you’ve complained to HR about them, it’s more likely you could be out of a job! Continue to look for a new job!
