A 12-year-old runaway teen called her mother Monday afternoon and told her mother she was being held against her will and being forced to engage in prostitution. Police responded to the call from a hotel in Laurel where the arrested 42-year-old Derwin Smith. Smith had been traveling back and forth from Washington D.C. to Atlantic City with the girl and controlled all of the money.

The teen ran away from her home several weeks ago and was left alone several times. She called her mom to tell her where she was staying at the time and her mother alerted police. Smith had recently been evicted from a home living with a woman and eight children.

Smith is facing human trafficking of a minor charges and false imprisonment. He is being held on a $3 million bond at the Anne Arundel Detention Center.
