R. Kelly Hospitalized After Overdose in Prison
R. Kelly has suffered a reported overdose behind bars, after he and his legal defense team accused prison officials of conspiring to kill the singer.
Kelly was placed in solitary confinement on Tuesday, June 10, and just two days later, prison staff allegedly gave him a life-threatening dose of medication. By the next morning, June 13, he was experiencing dizziness, blurred vision and fainted in his isolation cell.
The singer was rushed to Duke University Hospital from the Butner Federal Correctional Complex in North Carolina, where doctors kept him under observation for two days.
Details on what kind of medication was involved or Kelly’s current condition have yet to be revealed, but his defense attorneys are pushing for immediate action and his release from prison. They say the overdose wasn’t accidental, but a targeted act coming just days after they filed a motion about a possible murder plot to kill Kelly inside the facility.
The motion, which was submitted on the same day Kelly was placed in solitary confinement, included an affidavit from another inmate, who is also a member of the Aryan Brotherhood, accusing prison officials from the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) of recruiting the gang member for a hit on Kelly.
Kelly is currently serving a 30-year sentence for racketeering and sex trafficking, plus an additional 20 years for child pornography charges.
