Born Mary Christine Brockert, better known for her stage name Teena Marie was born today March 5th. The American singer/songwriter/producer was know for her soulful vocals which made many listners believe she was African-American. Her success in R&B and soul led her to earn the title of Ivory Queen of Soul. She played rhythm guitar, keyboards, and congas. She also wrote, produced, and sang all of her own songs.

Teena was very close friends with the late Rick James.

She was signed with many favored record labels including Motown, Epic, and Columbia Records. Teena Marie released 13 albums within her successful career – Congo Square, It Must Be Magic, Naked To The World, Irons In The Fire, and Lady T.

Around 2004, Teena Marie was struck in the head by a picture frame while sleeping in a hotel room. The blow caused her to have several seizures throughout the remainder of her life. On December 26, 2010 she was found unresponsive by her daughter Alia Rose in her Pasadena, California home.
