Former President Joe Biden is suing to block the House Judiciary Committee from obtaining and potentially releasing audio recordings tied to conversations he had with the ghostwriter of his memoir in 2016 and 2017, CNN reports.
The recordings were made while Biden worked on Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose with writer Mark Zwonitzer. According to court filings, the conversations included personal discussions about the death of Biden’s son, Beau Biden, and how it impacted his decision not to run for president in 2016.
The Justice Department plans to release the tapes to Congress on June 15. Biden’s attorneys argue the recordings are private and should remain protected, noting that the Justice Department previously defended keeping them confidential during Biden’s presidency.
The recordings became part of a federal investigation into Biden’s handling of classified documents after serving as vice president. Special counsel Robert Hur declined to file charges against Biden, though the investigation sparked debate over Biden’s age and memory.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan says the American public deserves to hear the recordings.
