R&B singer R. Kelly’s legal team has filed an urgent emergency motion requesting his release from federal prison, alleging that officials within the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) colluded with inmates from the Aryan Brotherhood to orchestrate a murder plot against him.

The motion, submitted on June 10, 2025, includes an affidavit from inmate Mikeal Glenn Stine, a self-identified, terminally ill Aryan Brotherhood member. Stine claims that three senior BOP officials at USP Tucson recruited him to kill Kelly in exchange for a promise of escape before dying. Stine reportedly refused and eventually transferred to the same North Carolina facility as Kelly, where he disclosed the plot.

Currently serving concurrent 30- and 20-year sentences for convictions including sex trafficking, child pornography and other charges, Kelly has been incarcerated since 2020. His attorneys argue the alleged threat is ongoing, citing the arrival of additional Aryan Brotherhood members, and warn that Kelly remaining behind bars under such conditions “constitutes cruel and unusual punishment” under the Eighth Amendment.

This marks the latest in Kelly’s legal efforts to secure safety or alternative custody. A similar 2020 appeal following a prior assault while jailed was denied. Kelly’s lawyers are now requesting home confinement or immediate intervention.
