A 35-year-old man is in critical condition after shooting himself during an incident at the District Court of Baltimore on Friday morning, authorities said.
According to Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley, the man entered the courthouse at 1400 E. North Avenue around 8:40 a.m. on Jan. 31. The reason for his presence at the courthouse remains unclear.
Officials reported that the man appeared to be experiencing a behavioral crisis and was seen pacing inside the building. When sheriff’s deputies and bailiffs attempted to engage with him, he pulled out a concealed firearm and pointed it at his own head.

Law enforcement officers urged the man to drop the weapon, and one deputy fired a shot, striking him in the lower body. However, during the confrontation, the man discharged his weapon, inflicting a gunshot wound to his head.
Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
As a result of the incident, the courthouse was closed for the remainder of the day.
“This again shows that behavioral and mental health is a real and deep issue,” Mayor Scott said. “We have to continue to do everything we can to address it, and we must ensure that individuals struggling with these issues do not have easy access to firearms or weapons.”
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
