A young girl has died days after accidentally shooting herself in the head with a stolen gun found at her grandmother’s home.

Baltimore Police announced that nine-year-old E’vaa Sewell died Tuesday. The incident took place last Saturday in the 3500 block of Ingleside Avenue.

“Our sweet little E’vaa was a student at Carter Elementary/Middle School,” a Baltimore City Schools spokesperson confirmed.

After a preliminary investigation, detectives believe Sewell got a hold of the weapon while her grandmother was at work, accidentally pulling the trigger.

Alethea Mitchell, 51, was charged with firearm access by a minor, possession of a firearm with a felony conviction, possession of a stolen firearm, and other handgun charges. grandmother, 51-year-old Alethea Mitchell, now faces several firearms charges.

“This incident is yet another heartbreaking tragedy involving an innocent child shot due to a guardian irresponsibly possessing a stolen gun and failing to prioritize gun safety and security,” Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said in a statement. “It is both infuriating and, most importantly, preventable. The men and women of the BPD remain committed to removing illegal guns from our city and promoting the secure and responsible storage of firearms to prevent such senseless tragedies.”

The gun turned out to be stolen from North Carolina, and Mitchell is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to prior burglary and drug convictions.
