Montgomery County Reports Significant Decline In Overdose Deaths

Montgomery County health officials have reported a notable decrease in overdose deaths for 2024, presenting updated statistics to the County Council this week. In a promising trend, the county recorded 139 overdose deaths in 2020, followed by 142 in 2021. There was a decline to 109 deaths in 2022, but numbers rose again to 138 in 2023. However, through September 2024, the county has seen a remarkable drop to just 57 overdose deaths, marking a 50% decrease compared to the same period in 2023.

Deaths specifically linked to fentanyl overdoses have also decreased significantly, showing a 57% year-over-year reduction. Health officials attribute this decline to several key factors, including increased education and awareness campaigns, greater availability of Narcan, and the diligent efforts of law enforcement.

While these developments are encouraging, Davis emphasized the importance of preventing new users from starting drug use as a critical strategy to sustain the downward trend in overdose deaths.
