Our Sunday morning slash afternoon was rocked with the news of Alex Trebek’s passing. The famed host of the hit show ‘Jeopardy!’ died Sunday after a long fight with Pancreatic cancer. He was 80.

The ‘We Love You, Alex’ Moment

For me and most of peers, Trebek was literally a staple in our lives.

He’s been hosting the show longer than I’ve been around and my grandparents (both sides) would spend their evenings yelling Jeopardy! answers at the TV. To be honest, I used to think it was a boring show when I was a kid but the older I got, the more I began yelling random answers at the TV myself.

It’s a great show. Trebek’s stoicism, humility, precision, and intelligence made it magical.

One of my favorite moments in show history came shortly after Trebek announced his cancer diagnosis. During the “Final Jeopardy” round of the show’s “Tournament of Champions” in 2019, contestant Dhruv Gaur surprised Trebek with his answer.

Saying ‘Goodbye’ to a Star

‘Jeopardy!’ Executive Producer Mike Richards was very vocal about missing Trebek and what he meant to the team. He called Trebek’s passing an “enormous loss” in a statement issued Sunday. “His belief in the importance of the show and his willingness to push himself to perform at the highest level was the most inspiring demonstration of courage I have ever seen,” Richards shared. “His constant desire to learn, his kindness and his professionalism will be with all of us forever.”

“You know, here’s a true story, man. I grew up, I learned English because of you,” Albert Thakur told Trebek during a post-show conversation. Thakur won $20,400 in Thursday’s episode. “And so, my grandfather, who raised me — I’m gonna get tears right now — I used to sit on his lap and watch you every day, so it’s a pretty special moment for me, man,” he continued.

The show currently has no plans to name a new host and will air episodes hosted by Trebek until Christmas. Trebek was last in studio on Oct. 29th.
