It’s very rare to hear a rapper say they grew up wanting to be anything other than a —yet Schoolboy Q wanted to be a police officer.
In an interview with Billboard magazine, the rapper revealed that as a youngster in L.A., he dreamt of a career in law enforcement. He told the mag, “It’s funny, I wanted to be a cop — until I started running from them.”
Although Q spent time playing football at West Los Angeles College, he claims that he has “a thing with listening to authority” which caused him to drop out of college altogether. He told the mag, “The gangbanging lifestyle started catching up to me. When you’re in high school, you get monitored. In college, you’re just hanging out all day. I didn’t give a f– about football no more. I didn’t give a f– about anything.”
Ironically enough, on July 8th, the day that Q’s latest album, Blank Face LP, dropped, the world was mourning the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castille who were gunned down by police officers. The rapper, who has “F– LAPD” tatted on his shoulders, tweeted that day:
In honor of the recent shootings and America’s long-running struggles with race relations, Q teamed up with some of the members from his Black Hippy crew to remix his first single “That Part,” in which he rapped, “Gangbangin’ like we stand for somethin’/When Alton Sterling gettin’ killed for nothin’/Two cowards in the car, they’re just there to film/Sayin’ #BlackLivesMatter should’ve died with him.”
