With the outcome so far of the Freddie Gray case, it’s pretty clear that the Police policies need to be updated. During a Press Conference yesterday, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake, Police Commisioner Kevin Davis and other members of the Department of Justice, issued the new “use of force” policy that goes into effect on July 1st, 2016.
Some of the key components of the new policy include the need to “de-escalate the situation when possible, clearer terminology and definition, it establishes a “use of force” model to assist officers in forced decisions. It also requires officers to provide aide including EMS or immediate hospital transport to injured persons or those claiming to be injured. It restricts the situations in which officers are authorized to discharge a firearm at or from a moving vehicle.” It also requires fellow officers to notify a supervisory if they notice another officer using excessive force.
This is first the time the “use of force” policy has been updated since 2003. Get more details about the “use of force” policy, here.
