In November 2014 reality star, Natalie Nunn announced that she and husband, Jacob Payne, were expecting their first child. The couple that so famously got married with cameras documenting the journey on Bridezillas, were ecstatic.

A few months later, in February, Nunn announced that she had miscarried the baby.

According to a survey published in Obstetrics & Gynecology, 30 percent of pregnancies result in miscarriage. “Most people think it’s an incredibly rare event, so when it happens to them they feel very isolated and they will look to themselves and think they must have done something wrong,” says study author Dr. Zev Williams, director of the Program for Early and Recurrent Pregnancy Loss at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Health System.

Despite the feeling of isolation, nearly one million miscarriages occur in the U.S. each year.

“When I had the miscarriage, I was at a place where I was very depressed,” Nunn told MadameNoire in an recent interview. “I was very sad. I didn’t really want to do anything, I just stayed in the house. I was just eating and staying home and I just kind of got depressed and lazy. Then I noticed I was about 42 pounds over my normal weight. I was like 187 pounds. I ended up going to Miami but paparazzi got pictures of me on the beach and it went everywhere. I was just really, really heavy.”

She has since transformed that pain into strength, by working out with her husband who’s a former football player.

“I started going in the gym and found myself just fooling around in there,” Nunn said. “I was all over the place and then not focusing on certain areas. So Jacob made this calendar for me. And for a whole year I was literally doing these workouts. But after the first 90 days, I lost 42 pounds. And people were seeing me do this transformation because I was on Snapchat and Instagram, and people were like, ‘What are you doing?’ and ‘What workouts are you doing?’”

With this new outlook on life and healthy lifestyle, Nunn and her husband created the No Payne No Gain 90-Day Challenge, that promotes weight-loss through a series of workout and diet changes.

But the bigger lesson is making the best out of a tragic situation.

“I make more money,” Nunn says. “All because I’m up and at it every day with full energy, a glow, no negativity. It’s crazy. Fitness and health is no joke. It affects everything you’re trying to do.”
