Cookie lovers, we have a reason to celebrate tonight: Taraji P. Henson took home the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a television drama.

The actress and perennial friend-in-our-head made history, taking home the biggest award of her career (she was previously nominated for an Oscar for her role in The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button but did not win). And she definitely made good use of her time.

First, on her walk up, she handed out cookies to everyone she passed, including Leonard DiCaprio. Then when someone stepped on her gown, she jokingly yelled “get off my train!” (seriously though, how dare he?)

Once she got on stage, she quickly delivered a hysterical (and well-deserved) shut down of the Hollywood Foreign Press. In the perfect “you gon’ learn today” moment, she mentioned to the crowd that she waited 20 years for her award, and the producers were going to give her and her fans time to celebrate.

But her commentary about her long career was what really had everyone talking. While accepting her award for the role of Cookie, she said “who knew the role of an ex-con would take me around the world?” Shouting out some of her other notable roles, such as in The Karate Kid, she mentioned how she thought she would have won for those, but was surprised it was for “ex-con” Cookie. It was hard not to read into the comment, as Black actors often win major awards for roles as criminals, degenerates, drug dealers or down-on-their-luck characters (i.e. Denzel for Training Day, Mo’Nique for Precious, Halle Berry for Monster’s Ball etc).

Still, we know Taraji is thrilled and we are thrilled for her. It’s been a long time coming. Most of us folks knew all about her talent, the rest of the world is just late to the party. But better late than never.
