Christmas is usually a holiday of celebration, spending times with the ones you love, and seeing the smiles on your children’s faces on Christmas morning. . Unfortunately, for some there is not much to celebrate this holiday season. Due to the tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut, there are a lot of families who are grief stricken with the loss of their child. Everyone has been affected by this tragedy, and our hearts are broken for the precious victims and their families. At this time the families need all the help, love, and support they can get to cope with the loss of their child in such a tragic, unexpected way.

Christmas is also about giving back just as much as receiving. In light of this senseless tragedy, there are several organizations helping and funds that have been set up to help. In what way will you give back, how can you help? Here are a few memorial funds and nonprofits you can contact to give back this holiday season:

Sandy Hook School Support Fund– United Way has set up this fund to provide support services to the families affected by the mass shooting. Donations can be mailed to: Sandy Hook School Support Fund c/o Newton Savings Bank 39 Main Street, Newton CT 06470

Newton Memorial Fund– aims to help victims’ families pay for funeral costs, set up community-wide memorial, and a college fund for the students in Newton, CT

My Sandy Hook Family Fund– organizers are working to provide anything from airline tickets and hotel accomendations for out-of-town family members to attend funerals to delivering warm meals for grieving parents.

Emilie Parker Memorial Fund– in honor of Emilie Parker, a 6 year old victim from the mass shooting. This fund is to support Emilie’s parents in paying medical expenses, arranging for a funeral in Utah, and time off to grieve.

Danbury Hospital– partnered with other local counseling and mental health agencies within the community and is providing crisis intervention services 24 hours
