Epic Flooding Inundates Houston After Hurricane Harvey

A Flood Watch has been issued for the area from 2:00 p.m. Thursday through 2:00 a.m. Friday. Following the warning, City officials are urging Baltimore residents to prepare and avoid certain areas. Officials are strongly urging residents not to drive through flooded streets. “Turn around, don’t drown.”

Effective at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, several streets in Harbor East will be closed due to flood risk, including:

  • Aliceanna Street between Caroline and Bond Streets
  • Caroline Street between Thames and Aliceanna Streets

Additional closures in flood-prone areas are expected throughout the day.

These include but are not limited to:

  • Hillen Road at 35th Street
  • Mt. Washington at 5910 Falls Road, Meadow Mill at 3600 Clipper Mill Road, Purnell Drive at W. Forest Park Avenue
  • 600 W. Patapsco Avenue, S. Hanover Street, Frankfurst Avenue, Frederick Avenue at N. Bend Road, Frederick Avenue at Beechfield Avenue
  • North Point Road at Quad Avenue, E. Monument Street at Pulaski Highway, Fleet Street at Aliceanna Street, Fleet Street at Caroline Street

Sandbag Distribution and Free Parking Options

To help mitigate flood damage, the Department of Transportation is distributing sandbags Thursday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at three sites:

  • Fells Point: Intersection of Thames St. and Broadway
  • Irvington: Stillmeadow Church, 5110 Frederick Ave
  • Mervo High School: Hillen Rd and E. 35th St.

Residents in low-lying areas are also encouraged to move vehicles to safer ground.

Free parking is available beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the Fleet & Eden Garage (501 S. Eden Street) and Little Italy Parking Garage (400 S. Central Avenue).

Vehicles must be removed by 9:00 a.m. Friday to avoid charges.

City Services and Closures

  • Baltimore City Public Schools and Enoch Pratt Free Library branches will close at 2:00 p.m.
  • Recreation centers and outdoor recreation activities, including summer camps and city pools, will close by 5:00 p.m.
  • Pools will shut down earlier, at 2:30 p.m.

Emergency Shelter Services

The following City-funded shelters will be operating in an emergency capacity beginning at 12:00 p.m. Thursday until 9:00 a.m. Friday:

  • Weinberg Housing and Resource Center, 620 Fallsway (for single adults)
  • Fairfield Inn, 101 S. President Street (for couples and families)

Street outreach teams will assist individuals in relocating to shelters through 4:00 p.m.
