Director Ryan Coogler’s new horror film, Sinners, is already rewriting the rules, both on and off screen. The vampire thriller, starring famed actor and longtime collaborator Michael B. Jordan, shook up Hollywood with a $45 million opening weekend, marking the biggest debut for an original film since Jordan Peele’s Us in 2019.

Sinners also made history as the only horror film in more than 35 years to earn a rare A CinemaScore, proving strong audience reception and word-of-mouth momentum.

Coogler, best known for Fruitvale Station, Creed and Black Panther, made headlines not just for the film’s success, but for the groundbreaking deal behind it. Warner Bros. granted Coogler an unprecedented level of creative and financial control for the film, and he will receive a share of the box office revenue before the studio turns a profit. This move is nearly unheard of in the movie business with Coogler also gaining full ownership rights to the film after 25 years. Industry insiders say the deal has some studios nervous about what it might mean for future filmmaker negotiations.

Michael B. Jordan, who has starred in all of Coogler’s feature films to date, delivers a haunting performance in a role that’s already sparking Oscar buzz.

With Sinners, Coogler continues to prove he’s one of the most innovative voices in modern cinema; one willing to take bold swings in both storytelling and behind-the-scenes power.
