Sources report that the Griselda Records rapper Benny the Butcher was shot in Houston during an attempted robbery. His condition is unknown.

The shooting happened Saturday, TMZ says. Benny and his team were approached by men who demanded their jewelry from them. After hesitating to give the assailants the jewelry, Benny was shot in the leg before the men fled the scene. Suspects have not been apprehended but Houston authorities are continuing the investigation.

Industry heavyweights like Juicy J, Reason, and Meek Mill began showing love to Benny once the news began spreading.

Benny just got his first Billboard charting album with Burden of Proof peaking at #29 on the Billboard 200. Dylan Green of Pitchfork writes on the album, “the Griselda Records rapper reflects on old battle scars and new riches over luxury beats helmed by Hit-Boy. Though he occasionally steps into cosplay, the result is ambitious.”

My Take

It really trips me out because Benny has been on quite the run in recent years.

If we’re being honest about it, seeing him and the Griselda Records team here at the Baltimore Sound Stage earlier this year was the last concert I went to before COVID hit. It was packed wall to wall and it probably was one of my favorite moments of this year. Living in Buffalo for a year, I remember hearing about Griselda Records’ journey.

Really humbling to see how far they’ve come but also sad to see that it has made them a target.

I really hate how we treat each other when we get on. I know we become targets and “quick come ups” once success starts to unfold but I just wish it didn’t have to be like that. As naive as it may sound from the surface, I hope that one day we can appreciate each other.
