Nearly 30 years after its debut, N.W.A‘s “F*ck tha Police” is still making waves.

A DJ in Westfield, Mass. has been charged with disorderly conduct for playing the song at a bar last year while cops tried to empty the venue because it was over capacity. The incident occurred in October, but the DJ in question, DJ Boogy, has just broken his silence on the matter.

DJ Boogy, whose real name is Kashawn Harris, told Masslive, “I had no intention of inciting a riot…It was just college kids having fun…. For them to even think I was trying to start riots was frustrating for me. That’s not my kind of background, that’s not where I come from.”

Harris, an alumnus of Westfield State University, was invited to DJ the homecoming party and eagerly accepted.

I believed at that time the combination of alcohol, the excessive amount of people in the bar and the song that the DJ chose to play at that time was an intentional act by the DJ to incite the crowd which showed a reckless disregard for public safety,” Officer Juanita Mejias wrote in her report of the episode.

Police claim that he played “F*ck the Police” once the officers arrived, but Harris says he cued up the song before then.

Luckily, DJ Boogy’s only punishment is a $50 fine.
