Kendall Jenner comes across as the shy and sensitive sister on Keeping Up with the Kardashians, but in her most recent interview with GQ, the model reveals a tougher side we haven’t really been introduced to before.
But then again, you’d have to have pretty tough skin to survive and thrive in the industry she works in, right?
Hitting the publication’s May cover in a bikini and going topless for the subsequent spread, Kendall dishes on the rumors surrounding her father’s alleged gender transition, growing up in the reality TV world, and more.
Here are a few interesting excerpts from her interview, plus a couple of photos for your viewing pleasure.
On her dad Bruce Jenner:
“My life was always different growing up,” Kendall Jenner tells GQ’s Zach Baron of her reality-show upbringing. “I mean, even before the show, my dad was who he is. He’s an Olympic athlete. And we were going to premieres, like Finding Nemo premieres, and we would be little kids, like, before the show, walking down the red carpet.” Baron travels to Paris Fashion Week to try to keep up with the Kardashians’ newest superstar and discovers firsthand just how unordinary Kendall’s life really is.
“It’s really weird. I understand that it’s not normal,” she says of the constant paparazzi attention. “But it is normal.” Baron asks if she’s comfortable having news of her father, who may or may not be undergoing a gender transition, out in the world. “That’s not about me, so we can move on,” she says. And when he points out that her name is on the cover of Us Weekly—“Kendall & Kylie finally hear it from him as cameras roll!”—she says: “All that is bullshit. I don’t even know what they’re talking about, so I have no idea.” When pressed on whether she’s upset because the story is true or because it’s not true, she says, “That is not for me to answer.”
On the cameras following her for KUWTK:
“It’s actually really hard for me to think of,” she says of imagining life without Keeping Up with the Kardashians. “But that day will come, and it’ll be fine. Everything that happens is still going to happen, just minus the cameras.” Her mother and sisters chose this life. But “me and my little sister were placed in,” she reminds Baron. “We didn’t have a say. It was in our home. There was no way we couldn’t be on it.” This life, the crazy caravan of paparazzi trailing her at all times, is all she knows. “Honestly, I can’t answer that question,” she responds when asked if she would have chosen differently. “I have no idea. I was 10 years old when the TV show started. I don’t remember what it was like before.” Despite the cameras always rolling, she doesn’t feel like she needs to play a character on the show. “It’s completely me,” she says. She also denies that the producers have a role in shaping the show into story lines and narratives. “It’s all real, so when there’s a story line, it’s all done after the fact that we’ve filmed, because that’s obviously how it makes sense, because that’s just how it actually happened.”
On becoming a model:
Kendall has now built a solid career as an elite model. “I didn’t do it because I felt like I had to prove something,” she says of her modeling career. “This is a career that I’ve always wanted. And I mean, what else would I be doing? I probably would have gone to school to get the degree to go to work, when work was already there.” She’s deliberately kept the E! cameras away from this part of her life. “I told them from the beginning, I was like, ‘Okay, love you guys, but we’re not gonna do this. You’re not gonna follow me to shows, you’re not gonna be with me on this ride.’ ”
On being swarmed after a recent Balmain show:
Baron joins Kendall at the Balmain show and witnesses her nearly get swept away by a fan-mob as she walks out of the building. (Her security guard was bogarted by mother Kris, leaving her tiny driver responsible for slugging through the crowd.) People are tugging on her sleeves and her hair, screaming her name. Before the car could even pull away, she is on the phone with Kris. “Why the fuck would you let [security guard’s name redacted] leave without me, Mom! We just got fully attacked!” Kendall then calls Bruce. “Hi, Dad, I just got almost killed by a million kids,” she says as her hands shake. Later that evening, she and Kris watch footage of the earlier mob scene. “I can’t believe they were pulling me that hard!” she says with hardly a trace of anxiety. (Kris gets a call shortly after; her ringtone is “Gold Digger.”)
