Fortnite players who have disputed charges against the battle royale game and their parent company Epic Games Inc. could be in for a substantial payment.
The Federal Trade Commission declares Fortnite is required to return more than $72 million to gamers who believe they’ve been charged unintentionally. The FTC believes Fortnite essentially tricked gamers out of millions of dollars.
The process in which Fortnite is accused of duping customers out of money is called “dark patterns”. Essentially, the company used an elaborate combination of design tricks that resulted in people spending money unintentionally. The FTC asserts that Fortnite violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

As a result, kids were spending money without their parents’ permission. Epic Games Inc. then went on to block certain gamers who disputed the transactions.

According to the FTC, the company unlawfully charged players for unwanted purchases, let children rack up unauthorized charges without their parents’ permission, and blocked some users who disputed wrongful charges from accessing their purchased content.
