With the year in review and MTV Rap Fix’s verdict its only right that we give you our top 5 picks for breakthrough artists of the year. According to HiphopCleopatra, this year’s breakthrough artists should include both signed and unsigned as well as emcee’s and vocalist:
Top 5 Breakthrough Artist of 2011:
- Machine Gun Kelly – The Ohio bred rapper has put his stamp on the game and was crowned the 2011 MTV Rap Fix Breakthrough Artist of the Year. Who can argue with that?
- Frank Ocean – One member of the weird collective, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, has stole the scene. Although Tyler the Creator’s devilish rhymes has the wave, the public can’t deny talent. Frank Ocean has written songs for John Legend, Brandy, and even Beyonce (“I miss You” Album 4). Yes we said Beyonce, Keri couldn’t even do that.
- Tinie Tempah – This English artist toured with Big Sean and Wiz Khalifa this past summer and has been nominated for over 20 awards in both the UK and in the US; enough said.
- Kendrick Lamar– Has made a huge name for himself since the release of his 2010 mixtape “O-verly”. he is also nominated as one of MTV Rap Fixes’ Breakthrough Artist Of the Year.
- The Weeknd – New to the mainstream, yet his name is buzzing all over college campuses. This artist is a little shy of 250k followers on twitter, but we predict he will be the next best thing spring 2012.
Breaking out as an artist is not as easy as it seems. We would like to congratulate these artists on their work thus far.
