Durrell Bishop, a singer/songwriter/producer/musician, is a rising star on the music scene. The 28-year-old Baltimore native has been making moves all across the country and intends to make his mark on the r&b scene at the release of his debut album, The Introduction on Durrell Bishop, in stores July 4.

Bishop was introduced to music at a young age. His mother is a singer , dad a bass player, grandmother played the piano and he played the drums at his church home, New Psalmist Baptist Church. “I was surrounded by music. I live and breathe music and always have.”

He admits that once he decided he wanted to pursue r&b music, he did not have complete support from his family. Although they listened to Marvin Gaye, Barry White and jazz, r&b was not the direction where they pictured their son. “I was influenced by Jodeci, R. Kelly, Bobby Brown, Marvin Gaye and Barry White.”

Bishop was offered his first record deal by DefJam. He recorded a demo but unfortunately that relationship with the label was short-lived. Shortly after, he was then offered a deal by Atlantic Records and that too did not flourish. This did not discourage the artist who understood that the road to success would be bumpy but yet still within his eyes’ sight.

Bishop relocated to California and spent six years learning and networking. He and his business partner, Chris “Tek” O’Ryan, founded New Faze Entertainment. He became allies with Tomara Savage, who wrote Whitney Houston’s “Heartbreak Hotel”, and fellow Baltimore native and celebrity songwriter Makeba Riddick, who wrote Rihanna’s “Rude Boy”. New Faze Entertainment made great moves including the introduction of their first artist, currently signed to Bad Boy Entertainment, Adrian Hood. Hood’s single was featured on the motion picture soundtrack for “Daddy’s Little Girl”.

After six years, Bishop made his way back home and realized that Baltimore is full of talented individuals that lack the attention and support needed to make it in the business. “I couldn’t ignore the fact that there was a greater need that is beyond just myself to tackle. It’s Baltimore’s time to be placed on the map. We’re creating a movement”. Bishop and Eden’s Lounge teamed up to develop “The Set” every last Thursday of each month beginning in July. The Set will feature a mixture of artists like Young Steff, Paula Campbell and Durrell Bishop himself. They intend to bring in artists from all over the country to perform. Don’t worry, Durrell Bishop’s debut album is on its way.

The Introduction of Durrell Bishop hits stores July 4th. we can expect to hear timeless r&b music that was more popular during the 80’s and 90’s. We can expect to hear a bit of New Edition, R. Kelly, Bobby Brown, Trey Songz and Pleasure P influences. Don’t expect to find collaborations on this album. “It’s all me.”

Baltimore has another bright, talented entrepreneur/artist on our hands. Durrell Bishop is creating a movement that’s impossible to make happen alone. Baltimore, are you ready for the movement?
