9. Isaac Kinde

The key to improving cancer survival is through detection at the earliest stage possible, when therapies are most effective and the possibility of a cure is highest. DNA sequencing technologies offer the chance to identify patients with early stage cancers, but are plagued by relatively low accuracy and their usefulness in the clinic is limited for this reason. Isaac and his colleagues are revolutionizing the field by developing techniques that substantially improve sequencing accuracy, which not only can be broadly applied in early cancer detection, but in forensics and prenatal diagnostics as well. Ongoing research by Isaac and others is demonstrating how these improvements can be used to detect cancers arising from the colon, pancreas, and ovaries in a simple, noninvasive manner. His innovations are the subject of several patent applications and articles describing his work have appeared in prominent scientific journals such as Science Translational Medicine, Nature, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
