Cancel culture didn’t officially become a thing until 2019. Sure, folks on Twitter were “cancelling” celebs left and right before, but nothing actually stuck. However, this year, we actually got to see the great power behind the public’s opinion.
Some say cancel culture has gone too far, while others say it hasn’t gone far enough. Then there are others that like to downplay the term as something illegitimate and ineffective. Tme Magazine did an entire article explaining why “call-out culture”, as some Gen Xers like to call it, technically isn’t real. Writer Sarah Hagi wrote:
Those who condemn cancel culture usually imply that it’s unfair and indiscriminate. The problem with this perspective is cancel culture isn’t real, at least not in the way people believe it is.
Instead, it’s turned into a catch-all for when people in power face consequences for their actions or receive any type of criticism, something that they’re not used to.
She totally has a point. That’s why this year was so important for the future of of this country, the world and all the corrupt powers that be. The oppressed people all across the globe now have a voice and platform to call out ish that is harmful, unjust and simply not cool.
These celebrity’s careers took a huge L in 2019. Now don’t get me wrong, anyone can make a comeback — but for these folks, it’s highly unlikely. Hit the flip to check it out.

Jussie Smollett
Jussie. Jussie. Jussie. When news came out in late January that the actor had been attacked by MAGA hat wearing white men on a cold night in Chicago — fans and peers alike were standing in full solidarity with him. But his interview with Robin Roberts left folks feeling like something was a little fishy about the details. Fast forward a few weeks, more details were released that left people so confused, they just wanted Jussie to tell the truth. However, after his boss Lee Daniels and some of his Empire costars unfollowed him on social media, we all knew what was up. Shortly after, Empire was cancelled and so was Juicy Smoyay.

R. Kelly
What’s understood doesn’t have to be explained. The only thing crazy about the R.Kelly cancellation is that it took sooooo long for it to happen. Shout out to Dream Hampton for getting the ball rolling with her doc #SurvivngR.Kelly

Sabrina Claudio
Just like many clueless caucasian stars, Sabrina Claudio found herself facing the wrath of Black Twitter after old tweets of hers resurfaced, using the N-word and saying things like “It must suck to be a black girl with no booty” and “F*** it, I’ll be a black girl for Halloween.” Funny enough, Black girls were her main supporters, raving about her sultry, soulful voice. But ever since those tweets, it’s been crickets for Claudio.

Daniel Caesar
You gotta be pretty bold to defend a White woman for talking ish about Black women these days. You gotta be even bolder to dare the general public to cancel you. Well, Daniel Caesar got his wish after going on a drunk rant asking “Why are we being so mean to yes Julz?” “Why are we being so mean to White People? Go ahead and cancel me if you want.” Done.

Lori Loughlin/ Felicity Huffman
Not that many people were checking for Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman. But it was interesting to see White Twitter cancel the actresses following their college bribery scandal, in which they both were fined and faced jail time. Ahhhh, gotta love the Internet.
