Wizards Star Bub Carrington Hosts Youth Camp & Drive in Baltimore
Washington Wizards rising star and Baltimore’s own, Carlton “Bub” Carrington is proving that his impact stretches far beyond the court. On Thursday, the rookie point guard returned to his alma mater, St. Francis Academy, to launch the very first Bub Carrington Youth Development Camp and back-to-school event.
Partnering with the local nonprofit Breaking Chains, “Bub” helped create a two-day experience designed to uplift kids both mentally and physically. About 100 students participated, diving into workshops on mental health awareness, nutrition, and teamwork, along with plenty of time to hoop.
“Breaking Chains is a mental health program in Baltimore City. We knew people in the community and at the schools that I worked at needed extra support, and we wanted to be that resource around therapy services, mentoring, and peer coaching,” said Karima Carrington, Bub’s mother and the organization’s executive director.
Bub echoed that focus:
“It means a lot to me. You can’t perform your best if you’re not in the right headspace,” he said.
Kids didn’t just leave with new skills, they went home with brand-new school supplies courtesy of the Wizards and a free book from Mahogany Books to encourage summer reading.
Camper Cameron Jackson summed up the vibe:
“We got to do three-on-three…it was super fun and we got to do drills.”
With the event’s success, Breaking Chains announced more programs will roll out later this year.
