A construction worker is dead after a trench collapse at a work site in Owings Mills Tuesday morning, according to Baltimore County fire officials.

Emergency crews were called around 9:30 a.m. to the 9800 block of Lyons Mill Road, where they found the victim critically injured. Despite rescue efforts, the worker was pronounced dead a short time later.

Officials described the incident as a “trench accident,” but details about what led to the collapse remain under investigation.

In February, two construction workers were killed in Catonsville after a brick wall collapsed on them while they worked in a six-foot-deep trench. Crews spent nearly seven hours shoring up the unstable trench to prevent further collapse before recovering the victims, identified as 24-year-old Emerson Amestica and 32-year-old Wilmer Barzallo.

At the time, Baltimore County Fire Lt. Twana Allen noted that trench rescues are complex and time-consuming by necessity. “It’s a calculated method and it does take time, but they want to make sure that they are doing so in the safest measures,” she said.

In another incident last October, a man in Catonsville was rescued after falling 30 feet into a well. He spent nearly 24 hours trapped in the confined space before being pulled out and transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

Tuesday’s deadly collapse underscores the continued risks construction workers face in confined spaces and trenches. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the worker killed in Owings Mills.
