A 23-year-old man armed with a large double-edged spear was fatally shot during a police-involved incident in Columbia, according to the Howard County Police Department Monday evening.

Authorities say the man, whose identity has not been released, allegedly stabbed his 26-year-old brother inside a home near Carters Lane and Oakland Mills Road.

The victim was rushed to a hospital and is currently in critical condition, police reported.

Lori Boone, a public information officer for the department, stated that a call came in just before 7:30 p.m. reporting the situation. The 23-year-old reportedly called 911 himself and confirmed he was armed.

When officers arrived, the man approached one of them without dropping the spear despite commands to do so, leading officers to use lethal force, Boone explained.

Information about the number and location of gunshot wounds has not yet been released. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers sustained injuries during the incident.

The Maryland Attorney General’s Office Independent Investigations Division (IID) is currently on-site investigating. Attorney General Anthony Brown confirmed the division’s involvement via social media.

The IID is responsible for reviewing all fatal police-involved incidents in Maryland. This marks the first such case in Howard County this year.
