17-Year-Old Turns Himself In For Wilmer Hutchins Shooting
17-year-old Tracy Haynes is now facing a charge of aggravated assault mass shooting after turning himself in Tuesday night. He was booked into the Dallas County Jail at 9:32 p.m. with bail set at $600,000.
The incident marks a grim deja vu, happening just one year after gunfire last erupted at the same school. Police say Haynes is the suspected shooter, but his family says the news doesn’t match the young man they know.
:”I was shocked,” said Cynthia Haynes, his aunt, in an interview with The Dallas Morning News. “He was not raised like that. He came from a good family.”
Community leaders and local parents are asking hard questions about school safety, gun access and youth mental health, especially in underserved Black neighborhoods. While no lives were lost, the trauma still lingers. The four students that were injured are expected to recover however, the emotional scares in the school and surrounding community run deep. Local leaders are speaking out, pointing to a growing crisis in youth conflict resolution and the lack of support systems in place to catch problems before they escalate.
As the investigation unfolds, Dallas ISD’s Wilmer Hutchins High School will remain closed for safety assessments and emotional support services. The city is once again forced to confront a painful truth, until the roots of violence are addressed, the cycle will continue.
Stay tapped in here for more updates as this story is still developing. Prayers up for those students and their families as they try to make sense of this tragic incident.
