Winter weather is set to return tonight, with the possibility of snow early next week.

The National Weather Service office in Baltimore/Washington has issued winter weather advisories for Baltimore and central Maryland, anticipating a wintry mix from tonight through Thursday morning.

Forecasts from NWS predict a combination of rain, snow, and sleet this evening, followed by freezing rain overnight into tomorrow morning. Jeremy Geiger, a meteorologist with NWS Baltimore/Washington, expects the region to receive between one-tenth and two-tenths of an inch of freezing rain, along with a light dusting—less than an inch—of snow and sleet. Despite the limited accumulation, Geiger cautions that even minor amounts of ice and snow can create hazardous travel conditions.

“Ice can accumulate on trees and power lines, and black ice can make roads extremely slick,” Geiger noted. He advises residents to allow extra travel time and to keep sidewalks clear to prevent slipping.

The Maryland Transportation Authority announced via social media that crews are actively monitoring and treating roads. MDTA suggests postponing or canceling travel plans on Wednesday night if possible.

Geiger reported that showers are expected to start around 10 p.m. in the area. Freezing rain is likely to occur between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Thursday, transitioning to rain as temperatures rise between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Additionally, NWS Baltimore/Washington is tracking another round of wintry precipitation for Saturday, with a 90% chance of rain, temperatures dipping to around 35 degrees, and highs reaching 40 degrees. The agency is also keeping an eye on the potential for snowfall on Monday and Tuesday.

“There could be shifts in the system’s path, resulting in more or less precipitation,” Geiger explained. “Currently, it looks like snow may be the primary type of precipitation.”
