The inmate who assaulted Dylann Roof at the Charleston County Detention Center is now out on bond thanks to anonymous donations.

Bond had been set at over $100,000 for 25-year-old Dwayne Stafford, who was in jail on charges of strong armed robbery, assault and lying to police. After Stafford was released on Friday, Maj. Eric Watson noted that the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office has “no control” over who posts bail for inmates.

Roof, who was jailed after the terrible shooting at a black Charleston church in which nine people were killed, was out of his cell on Thursday to take a shower when Stafford rushed for him and assaulted him. CCSO officials cited “obvious violations” by a detention officer who was supposed to be keeping watch on Roof at the time of the assault.
