Customers who made their Sunday rounds at the Mariners Harbor Home Depot in New York City’s Staten Island community were taken aback by a 22-year-old staffer’s hat.

What made it so controversial? The hat reads, “America was never great.”

Krystal Lake started a social media firestorm after she wore the hat to work on Sunday, reports the Staten Island Advance.

“The point of the hat was to say America needs changing and improvement,” Lake told the Advance. “I don’t think it’s a positive message to say, ‘Let’s look to the past.’”

The message is a direct swipe at GOP presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump‘s slogan, “Make America Great Again.”

Lake, a Bernie Sanders supporter, told the Advance that she has received numerous death threats and biting criticism after wearing the hat.

“People have been saying really racist things to me and that they’re going to come and find me and that what I said is disgraceful and I hate America — but I don’t hate America,” Lake quipped.

“I know there are a lot of opportunities here,” Lake said. “I just wish we would worry about making America better — not ‘great again.’”
