The internet was all abuzz with folks predicting what they thought hip-hop’s flavor of the moment, Drake, would sell during his first week.

Now the numbers are out and it looks like Drake officially sold over 446,680 copies of his highly-anticipated debut album, Thank Me Later, according to SoundScan.

Industry rag, Hits Daily Double, published a number of 462,989 on their website yesterday, however their numbers are not what are used to determine the all-important Billboard album chart.  Billboard’s chart numbers come from the industry standard weekly SoundScan report.

While he fell short of the expectations of many (including T.I.), Drake’s showing is rather impressive in an era where selling 100,000 copies of an album in one week could earn you the number one slot, compared to several years ago where numbers like Drake’s were fairly common.

With hip-hop taking a dip in mainstream popularity these days, one can only wonder what Drake’s sales success will mean for the genre.  To put things in perspective, don’t expect to see any other hip-hop releases in the top 5 on Billboard’s Top 200 albums chart.  Don’t expect to see any in the top 10 either.  Even though Hits Daily Double’s numbers aren’t exact, they are generally a dependable snapshot of the chart, and you have scan all the way down to number 17 to find another hip-hop album on the list, B.O.B.’s The Adventures Of Bobby Ray, a far cry from the days when hip-hop dominated the top of the carts
