Hip-Hop and Soul music are filled with unlikely influences and Malcolm McLaren was no exception.

The London-born performer and Punk music icon was best known as the manager of The Sex Pistols but in 1983 he released an album with the World Famous Supreme Team called Duck Rock which contained the hits “Buffalo Gals” “Hey DJ” and “Double Dutch.”

This past Thursday April 8 , 2010 McLaren died at the age of 64 from Mesothelioma. It is rumored that he contracted the form of Cancer from asbestos in the walls of his famous design shop SEX.

“Malcolm McLaren RIP-music lost an icon today,” P Diddy wrote via Twitter. He sampled “Hey DJ” for Mariah Carey’s “Honey” in 1997.

“Hey DJ”

“Buffalo Gals”

“Buffalo Gals” has been sampled and referenced by everyone from De La Soul, Das Efx to Neneh Cherry and Eminem.

Eminem, “Without Me”

The irony of McLaren being sampled of course is that he embraced and incorporated sounds from around the world in his compositions. In fact, in 1998 McLaren released Buffalo Gals Back 2 Skool (Virgin Records), an album featuring hip hop artists like Rakim, KRS-One and De La Soul revisiting tracks from the original Duck Rock album.

Legendary Hip-Hop producer DJ Premier put together this tribute mix to McLaren. Feel free to download and share.
