Spike Lee has never been one to shy away from controversy.  In the 1988 film School Daze, Lee gives a semi-autobiographical account of his experience attending Morehouse College, the historically all male black institution in Atlanta, Georgia.  With a satirical eye, Lee explored hot-button topics such as colorism, misogyny, class divisions and apartheid.

While School Daze opened to some positive reviews with mainstream film critics, segments of the African-American community were unhappy with Lee airing their dirty laundry. In fact, Lee was asked to halt production while filming on the campuses of Morehouse, Spelman, and Clark Atlanta University because they felt School Daze cast black colleges in a negative light.  Coincidentally, some cast members of the film (Kadeem Hardison, Jasmine Guy, Darryl M. Bell) would go on to star in Bill Cosby’s sitcom, “A Different World,” which gave a more positive and sympathetic view of  black college life.  Lee would continue to be a cinematic provocateur, going on to direct racially and politically charged dramas like Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X, and Bamboozled.

The Urban Daily lists five reasons why School Daze continues to be one of the best films about higher learning.

Lawrence Fishburne—Fishburne gives a winning performance as Vaughn “Dap” Dunlap.  Dap is outspoken and politically progressive, but in a cruel twist of fate, his views are not welcome in setting that should foster independent thinking.  Between his pressuring school administrators to divest from South Africa and bumping heads with fraternity head Dean Big Brother Almighty (Giancarlo Esposito), Dap is considered Public Enemy #1.

Good Hair—In one of School Daze’s most memorable musical numbers, the two sororities on campus tackle one of black America’s dirty little secrets.  The light-skinned “Wannabes” and the browner, earthier looking “Jigaboos” is a painful reminder of the daily struggle black women endure  in a country that judges them on a Eurocentric standard of beauty.

Samuel Jackson—Jackson plays one of the town locals, who has  a serious inferiority complex when it comes to the students at Mission College.  In a confrontation with Dap and his boys, Jackson states “College don’t mean shit…Y’all n*ggas and y’all gonna be niggas forever—just like us!” In 2011, the class lines in the black community are still sharply drawn as evidenced by the feuds between Grant Hill and Jalen Rose, and the Spike Lee vs. Tyler Perry debate .

Soundtrack—Who would have thought that a movie as serious and topical as School Daze would produce one of the 80’s hottest club bangers?  E.U., a go-go group from Washington D.C. scored a pop hit with “Da Butt” creating a new dance sensation, and charted at #35 on Billboard’s Hot 100 list. And who could forget Tisha Campbell’s “I Don’t Wanna Be Alone Tonight?”


The Ending—No Spike Lee movie is ever complete without a ‘message’. After witnessing the debauchery during homecoming weekend, Dap takes matters into his own hands and literally shake some sense into the student body. Lee would prove eerily prophetic in this dramatic ending, as our people battle alarming statistics today: almost 70% of black children are born into single parent homes and only 47% of black males earning high school diplomas. We indeed need to “WAKE UP!”

Travel guest of grand prize winner must also be twenty-one (21) years of age or older and a legal resident of the U.S.  Winner and guest must possess required travel documents (e.g. valid photo I.D.) prior to departure and must travel on the same itinerary.  Travel guest will be required to sign and submit all requested release forms along with the grand prize winner.

PRIZES:

1. Daily qualifiers will each be awarded a cash prize of One Hundred Dollars ($100.00).

1. Two (2) Grand Prize winners will each be awarded a trip for two (2) to Spring Fest in Miami, Florida, comprised of:

• round trip air transportation for two (2) from an airport nearest the winner’s residence (within the continental U.S.) to Miami, FL (travel dates are May 28, 2011 and May 30, 2011.

The estimated retail value of the prize trip is $4,200.  Actual value will vary depending on winner’s point of departure and airfare fluctuations.  If the actual value of the prize is less than the stated approximate retail value, the difference will not be awarded in cash.  If for any reason a portion or whole prize cannot be awarded, the Giveaway Entities reserve the right to award a prize of equal or greater value.

Additional ground transportation, meals, gratuities, souvenirs, incidentals, and all other expenses not specified herein are the responsibility of the winner and his or her guest

1. No substitution of prize is offered, no transfer of prize to a third party is permitted and non-cash prizes may not be redeemed for cash value, except as determined by station management and/or the sponsor in its sole discretion.

2.    Listeners will be solicited to dial 1-866-974-2539 to participate in the Contest and be caller number 9.  Each morning a succession of celebrity voices will be played with each having a connection to the other and returning to the first celebrity. Caller number 9 will have the opportunity to guess the mystery voices that eventually lead back to the first voice.  If caller number 9 does not correctly identify the mystery voices, the next caller will be taken and the process will continue until a contestant provides the correct answer.

3.    Contestants that correctly identify the mystery voices will be awarded a qualifying prize of One Hundred Dollars ($100.00) cash (in the form of a check).   Then their names will be entered into the Grand Prize Drawing.

4.    Qualifiers will be instructed to go to the offices of the local Participating Station in their listening area to claim their prize.  Winners will be notified when the prize check is ready for pick-up.  Winners will be required to sign an IRS W-9 form.

5.    The grand prize winner will be selected at random from among all eligible contestants that qualified on the air during the Giveaway Period.  The grand prize winners will be announced on Monday, April 18th and Monday, April 25th around 7:50am EST.

6.    The grand prize winners will be notified by a representative of Syndication One and/or Sponsor via phone and provided with instructions for claiming their prize.

7.    Decisions of the Sponsor with respect to any aspect of the Giveaway are final.

The estimated retail value of the vacation package is $10,000.  Actual value will vary depending on winner’s point of departure and airfare fluctuations.  If the actual value of the prize is less than the stated approximate retail value, the difference will not be awarded in cash.  If for any reason a portion or whole prize cannot be awarded, the Sweepstakes Entities reserve the right to award a prize of equal or greater value.

Additional ground transportation, meals outside of the park, beverages, hotel room service, laundry service, local and long distance telephone calls, merchandise, souvenirs, incidentals, tips, gratuities, service charges or taxes, ground transportation between winner’s residence and the departure airport, luggage costs, and all other charges and items not otherwise described above are the responsibility of the winner and his or her guests.

Prize trip must be completed within six (6) months of being awarded or winner forfeits the prize package.  Travel dates and lodging are subject to availability, and certain restrictions and blackout dates may apply.

2.    No substitution of prize is offered, no transfer of prize to a third party is permitted and non-cash prizes may not be redeemed for cash value, except as determined by station management and/or the sponsor in its sole discretion.

3.    All Sweepstakes winners must sign and date official station release and waiver forms as requested. All forms must be returned within thirty (30) days of issue, failure to do so will result in winner forfeiting the prize.

4.    If for any reason a Sweepstakes winner provides notice that he or she has decided not to accept an awarded prize, the winner will be required to sign a release form acknowledging that they are forfeiting the prize. It will be at the discretion of the Sweepstakes sponsor and / or Sweepstakes administrator if another Sweepstakes winner is to be selected as the winner if time permits.

5.    Dates and times of concerts, events, and trips promoted by sponsors are subject to change and those changes are deemed to be beyond the control of the Sweepstakes Entities. Changes of venue, cancellation of engagements by performing artists, and/or their management may be permanent in nature. The Sweepstakes Entities are not obligated to make any effort to find an alternative prize under these circumstances.

6.    If a winner does not claim their prize within three (3) days of winning notification, the prize will be forfeited.

7.    Sweepstakes Winners must provide valid identification (i.e. via driver’s license, passport or other photo I.D.) to claim their prize.

8.    Sponsor and its affiliates, agents and subsidiaries will have no responsibility or liability for damages, losses or injury of any kind resulting from in connection with acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any prize.

EXECUTION:

1.    During the Sweepstakes Period, eligible participants will be encouraged to take part in the Sweepstakes by registering online via a link at www.rickeysmileymorningshow.com.  After completing the registration process, qualified entrants will be eligible for a chance to win the grand prize.

2.    The grand prize drawing will take place on April 25th.  The winner will be selected by random drawing from among all eligible entries received electronically through participating online and radio networks.

3.    The grand prize winner will be notified by a representative of Syndication One and/or Sponsor via phone and provided with instructions for claiming their prize.

4.    Decisions of the Sponsor with respect to any aspect of the Sweepstakes are final.

GENERAL CONDITIONS:

1.    Winners are responsible for all applicable taxes associated with the receipt of the prize (prizes are not transferable and may not be exchanged).

2.    Any person winning over $600.00 in prizes will receive an IRS form 1099 at the end of the calendar year for tax purposes and a copy of such form will be filed with the IRS as required by law.

3.    No purchase necessary. Sweepstakes is void where prohibited. Sweepstakes is subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations.

4.    Odds of winning depend upon the number of eligible entrants that register through participating radio and online networks during the Sweepstakes Period.

5.    By participating in the Sweepstakes, the winner or winners agree to have their name, voice, or likeness used in any advertising or broadcasting material relating to this Sweepstakes, in any media now known or hereafter devised for advertising or promotional purposes without additional compensation, and must sign a publicity release prior to acceptance of the prize. By entering this Sweepstakes, each participant agrees to comply with the Official Rules and the decisions of the Sweepstakes sponsor which shall be final and binding in all aspects relating to the Sweepstakes.

6.    All Sweepstakes winners will be required to sign a liability release prior to acceptance of any prize. Pursuant to the liability release, the winner or winners will agree to hold The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, the Participating Stations, Sponsor, Dial Global Communications, any other Sweepstakes parties and each of their respective affiliates, subsidiaries, agencies, officers, shareholders, directors, employees, agents and representatives of each of the foregoing, harmless against any and all claims or liability, directly or indirectly related to or arising from or in connection with Sweepstakes participation or the acceptance, possession or use / misuse of awarded prize or any portion thereof, or participation in prize-related activities, including but not limited to any related travel.

7.    Winners must provide valid identification (i.e. via driver’s license, passport or other photo I.D.) to claim their prize.

8.    The Sponsor retains the right to disqualify any Sweepstakes winner if all Sweepstakes rules are not followed; Sweepstakes void if prohibited by law.

9.    Sponsor reserves the right to make changes in the rules of the Sweepstakes in its sole discretion at any time without notice, which will become effective immediately upon being announced on the air and / or posted online. In the event any Winner is found to be in violation of these Official Rules or is otherwise determined by Sponsor, in its sole discretion to be ineligible, he/she will be required to forfeit prize or to reimburse the Sponsor for the stated value of a prize if such a violation is found after the prize has been used by Winner.

10.    The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, the Participating Stations, Sponsor, Dial Global Communications, participating sponsors and their respective parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates or their representatives, agents and employees are not responsible for the inability of any Sweepstakes winner to complete or continue a telephone call, facsimile transmission or internet registration due to equipment malfunction, busy lines, inadvertent disconnections, unavailable network, server, Internet Service Provider (ISP), communication failures or human error that may occur in the transmission, receipt or processing of entries. In addition, The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, the participating stations, Sponsor, Dial Global Communications, participating sponsors and their respective parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates or their representatives, agents and employees are not responsible for lost, misdirected, mutilated, illegible or incomplete Sweepstakes entries. Once submitted, entries become the property of the station and will not be returned.

11.    By accepting the prize, the winner acknowledges that The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, the Participating Stations, Sponsor, and Dial Global Communications have neither made, nor are in any manner responsible or liable for, any warranty, representation or guarantee, express or implied, in fact or in law, relative to the prize or to any portion thereof, including but not limited to its quality, mechanical condition or fitness for a particular purpose.

12.    The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, the Participating Stations, Sponsor, Dial Global Communications, their respective subsidiaries, affiliates, participating sponsors and promotional partners will not assume any responsibility for any changes in the execution of the Sweepstakes, including; cancellation of the Sweepstakes as a result of the occurrence of events not within the control of The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, the Participating Stations, Sponsor, Dial Global Communications, their respective subsidiaries, affiliates, participating sponsors, promotional partners and other radio stations, such as acts of God, strikes, terrorists acts or criminal acts of third parties.

13.    The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, the Participating Stations, Sponsors, and Dial Global Communications are not responsible for any incorrect or inaccurate entry information, whether caused by any of the equipment associated with or utilized in the Sweepstakes, and assume no responsibility for error omission, interruption, defect, failure, malfunction or delay in operation or transmission, or for any damage to participants phone, cell phone, mobile device, computer, hardware, software, or any other device, or for theft or destruction, tampering or unauthorized access to entry information, or for entries which are misdirected, inaccurate, incomplete or, inaudible, disconnected or any combination thereof) or for preemption or cancellation of the radio program, or for technical, network, typographical, human or other errors or problems relating to or in connection with the Sweepstakes, including, without limitation, errors or problems which may occur in the connection with the administration of the Sweepstakes, the announcement of prizes in any Sweepstakes-related materials. Mary Harvey, ex-wife of media personality/comedian Steve Harvey, made headlines recently when she released a series of YouTube videos slamming her ex-hubby.

Mary alleged that Steve turned their son Wynton against her and claimed that Steve’s current wife Marjorie was one of his many mistresses. The allegations upset Marjorie so much she announced that she would be filing a lawsuit against Mary.

Mary Harvey’s former assistant Jocelyn called into the Rickey Smiley Morning Show today to clear up some of the rumors and to give her take on the ongoing drama, laying much of the blame on Mary Harvey.
