Colin Kaepernick’s Been Protesting Police Brutality For Weeks, Rocks Pig Socks

For those who want to say that Colin Kaepernick’s wokeness is new, here’s another example of just how untrue that is.

According to Fusion, social media got wind of an old picture of the Niners quarterback rocking a pair of socks with pig police officers on them during practice. It’s believed that he’d worn these socks as early as August 10, but he had never been asked about them until now. Of course folks are in their feelings about this new development, but Kaepernick is clear: Be more mad about police brutality than what I wear of my feet.

I wore these socks, in the past, because the rogue cops that are allowed to hold positions in police departments, not only put the community in danger, but also put the cops that have the right intentions in danger by creating an environment of tension and mistrust. I have two uncles and friends who are police officers and work to protect and serve all people. So before these socks, which were worn before I took my public stance, are used to distract from the real issues, I wanted to address this immediately,” he said.

Since Saturday, Kaepernick has been a constant in the news for refusing to stand for the national anthem during a preseason game as a means to protest the police and state violence that Black Americans and people of color endure. The 28-year-old has come under fire by some who say his stance is disrespectful and dishonors veterans. While others have rallied behind him including veterans who recently started the trending hasthag #VeteransForKaepernick to show their support for his right to protest.

She’s Baaaaaack! Rachel Dolezal Has The Nerve To Headline a Natural Hair Rally

You’re favorite wannabe is baaaaack.

The Daily Beast wrote that since Rachel Dolezal, the white woman who sparked a media firestorm after being exposed for posing as African-American, has now emerged from obscurity to continue to co-opt another aspect of ourselves–Black natural hair.

This Labor Day weekend, she will headline the Naturally Isis Braid-On, Economic Liberty March and Rally in Dallas, Texas. Apparently Dolezal was invited by Isis Brantley, a celebrity stylist, natural hair activist, and owner of the Institute of Ancestral Braiding. (Perhaps no one else was available?)

When Brantley posted news of Dolezal’s involvement on her Facebook page, folks fired back, questioning why the former NAACP chairperson was asked to speak, let alone lead the event. In fairness, after being fired from her academia jobs, Dolezal did say that she braided hair to supplement her income. Just saying.

Dolezal stressed to the Daily Beast that she isn’t attending the event to create any drama to be in the news.

I’m not coming as a curiosity or for any controversy,” she said. “My intention is to support Isis and the braid freedom movement in whatever way it will be most helpful. I don’t want to be a liability for anyone. It’s a justice issue and I’ve been a social justice activist for years. It’s really that simple.”

Meanwhile, Brantley admits to being completely shocked that supporters were so irate.

I couldn’t believe it. People threatened to boycott me. They are calling me a sellout and saying that I am ‘Massa’s girl’ or some mess like that. I just stopped looking and blocked everybody,” she said.

You Don’t Say? Filling Police Vacancies Is Latest Struggle For Ferguson

Two years after Michael Brown’s shooting death in the town of Ferguson, Missouri, their local police department is struggling to hire more officers.

The department is currently facing 13 vacancies, down to 36 officers from 55 in 2014, the Associated Press wrote. While some have retired, officials admit that the wave of protests to hit the city and the national scrutiny the department has been under since Brown’s tragic death is scaring off potential candidates.

“Some just got fed up with police work,” Mayor James Knowles III said Wednesday.

However, Knowles also claims that finding “qualified” applicants has been tough, since the force is being pushed to diversify its mostly white staff. But, the city of Ferguson has sponsored two young Black men at St. Louis County’s police academy, paying for their training in exchange for an agreement to work in the suburb upon graduating, The AP noted. One recently graduated; the other is in the current class; and a third will be chosen for next year’s program.

But some residents are not buying what Knowles is selling, accusing the city of holding back on hiring in order to save money, a claim that the city vehemently denies.

As of now, the local PD have received 20 applications in August, which makes Knowles hopeful.

“I think we’re seeing more confidence in Ferguson now, and hopefully we’ll get more qualified candidates,” he said.
