Remember that old school jam, Freak Like Me, by Adina Howard?

It was a revolutionary anthem celebrating sexual liberation for Black women. Controversial, bold and undeniably sexy, the song reached No.2 on the Billboard Music Charts and solidified Adina’s place in 90s music history.

Taking it back, here’s an update on R&B diva, Adina Howard.

Then

Adina released her first album, Do You Wanna Ride?, with hit single Freak Like Me, back in 1995. Since its release, she has come to be seen by many as one of the early pioneers of female sexual expression through music. The single went platinum and peaked at #2 on the U.S. and U.S. R&B Billboard charts, right behind This is How We Do It by Montell Jordan. The album itself was also a success and was certified gold.

That following year, Adina hooked up with Warren G for a collaboration on the Police Story 3: Super Cop soundtrack with “What’s Love Got to Do with It”. The song was considered an international success for the pair, peaking at #2 on the UK charts and #1 in New Zealand. She was featured on the soundtracks for several other movies, including A Thin Line Between Love and Hate, Sunset Park, and Woo.

Adina released three more albums following her debut: Welcome to Fantasy Island (1997), The Second Coming (2004), and Private Show (2007), but none proved to be as successful as the first.

Now

Today, Adina can call herself a professionally-trained chef, wife, and mother. Also, after a nine-year hiatus and several label changes later, Adina is gearing up to release her latest album titled Resurrection later this year. She recently released single Bad 4 Me and is touring the country as she preps for the upcoming album release.

Freak Like Me continues to show up in pop culture. UK girl group, Sugababes, released a cover of the song in 2002, which debuted at #1 on the UK Singles chart. Several other artists, including Pitbull, Chris Brown and Teyana Taylor, and DJs R3hab and Quintino, have sampled the song as recently as this year, proving that the single is still very much relevant
