Woman Listening to Music

Black voices are starting to make their own lanes in the media, creating a space for us to be heard as news, entertainment and pop culture pundits. Podcasts have been a thing for years, but I didn’t start listening until Serial took the world by storm.

MUST READ: Black Voices Beauty Editor Talks Must-Haves, Bad Hair Days & Worst Moments

That’s when I realized there’s a whole world of voices out there, sharing their personal experiences navigating through whatever niche they’re in. And then I noticed there’s a small, yet powerful selection of Black voices out there in podcast land. And honestly, nothing gets me more excited than hearing the unfiltered opinions of smart, witty and ratchet Black voices. Check out some of the podcasts that have my attention right now and that should get yours!

1. The Read

Two of Black Twitter’s biggest and boldest personalities, @KidFury and @Crissles have teamed up together for The Read podcast. Even though it’s only two years old, it’s one of the fastest growing podcasts out. These two New York City implants chat each week about adjusting to life in the big apple–including rats and they have some of the funniest commentary you’ve ever heard.

2. Neck Of The Woods

Freshalina is the brash and hilarious voice behind Crunktastical.net (Crunk & Disorderly), so obviously her podcast is unfiltered, absolutely ridiculous and spot-on. She calls herself Black Twitter’s favorite cousin as she invites listeners to take a seat on her front porch as she sounds off in her signature southern accent on hip-hop pop culture and beyond. Neck of The Woods is a hilarious weekly wrap-up of everything ranging from ratchet to righteous.

3. Friends Like Us

Marina Franklin is one of my favorite Black comediennes. Her podcast offers frank and unique talk about culture, comedy, race and whatever else comes up. She also features women of color on a regular basis, so for all those powers that be that claim there’s not enough funny Black women in the world–check out Marina’s podcast. We’re there.

4. RuPaul What’s The Tee?

Legendary drag superstar, RuPaul tapped one of his most vocal judges from “RuPaul’s Drag Race” to star alongside him, Michelle Visage in his podcast. If you watch the show, you know that Ru and Michelle are best of friends, but in this podcast, their bond shines and the jokes are all worth trying to pass off as your own.

5. Black Girls Talking

This podcast is like being at the beauty shop, only not. Four intelligent Black women (Alesia, Fatima, Aurelia and Ramou) team up to bring thoughtful conversations about race and pop culture. Their bottom line is to help the world understand women of color better and God knows we need that.

6. Golden Brown Girls

I’m a bit partial to this new podcast because it’s mine. Each week, I grab one of my favorite brown girls for a good old gab fest. I cater the show to the guest, so the subject matter reflects what they’re interested in. Everything from Nicki Minaj to body image to racism and successful women being eternally single, every topic digs deeper than surface level.

7. She’s Beauty & The Beast

This is a digital vision board, brought to you by Sway in the Morning’s own Tracy G. She’s Beauty & The Beast is a mantra for multi-faceted, “bold ass” (Tracy’s words, not mine) young woman who cares just as much about quenching her spiritual needs as she does her sexual needs. She’s Beauty And The Beast offers audio vision boards for women addicted to good vibes only. A series of modern affirmations that offer a non-holier-than-thou, nonjudgmental, relatable and uplifting voice any time, any where right in your headphones.

8. Rantin’ & Ravin’

Two of my favorite Black voices in comedy, Yamaneika Saunders and Chloe Hillard have teamed up for a hilarious podcast that literally cannot disappoint. Saunders is on the new Oxygen reality series, “Funny Girls” and Chloe is touring the United States, bringing comedy everywhere she goes.

9. Another Round

What’s seemingly unfair (Buzzfeed creating podcasts), is actually one of the best things ever. Buzzfeed’s own Tracy Clayton and Heben Nigatu. They are like Patty & Selma, the disgruntled twins on “The Simpsons,” but funnier. Not only do they have guests every show that you want to get to know, but they have drunken debates, jokes from Tracy and a bunch of other random things that will make your hearts smile.

10. Last Name Basis

When a husband and wife get together, not only is there love in the room, but there’s plenty of nitpicking, nagging and teasing. Franchesca Ramsey and her hubby Patrick are a beautiful interracial couple who are challenging stereotypes, tackling topics like racism, science and more. The best part? Fran’s singing and poking at Patrick.

Happy listening!
