As someone who read the book, “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” multiple times at the age of 11, I can relate to the millions who have experienced that freeing love affair with Maya Angelou‘s work. “Caged Bird” was just the beginning for me as I soon discovered other greats like “Heart of A Woman,” “And Still I Rise” or “All God’s Children Need Traveling Shoes” and “Singin’ and Swingin’ And Getting Merry Like Christmas.”

I thank Dr. Angelou for the experiences of getting lost in her books for days and weeks at a time and throughout the constant daily infiltration of trashy reality TV and ratchetness, I still have poetry like Maya Angelou’s that helped to frame my core.

Dr. Angelou’s family officially announced her passing via her Facebook page:

Dr. Maya Angelou passed quietly in her home before 8:00 a.m. EST. Her family is extremely grateful that her ascension was not belabored by a loss of acuity or comprehension. She lived a life as a teacher, activist, artist and human being. She was a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace. The family is extremely appreciative of the time we had with her and we know that she is looking down upon us with love.

Maya Angelou touched and influenced many all over the world and I couldn’t help but feel a sincere sadness and urge to cry when I heard the news of her passing.  Although she lived an amazing life of 86 years, I was awestruck to learn that this icon no longer lives amongst us.
