I’ve never been one to write poetry but I’m a strong supporter of the art. It’s truly an art that should be respected and appreciated. A poem is an unspoken form of language that can only make sense to those whose hearts are open to receive it. When you hear poetry, you stop and think about the words being spoken.
Dr. Maya Angelou was not just a poet! She was ICONIC! She was INSPIRING! She was TRIUMPHANT! Her story spoke volumes and to volumes of people who would lend an ear and a heart.
She fought a good fight and although I don’t have any of her work in my collection (for now), I will always carry what she resembles to the black community: STRONG, PROUD, INTELLECT, UNIQUE, and POWERFUL! That’s what Dr. Maya Angelou means to me!
Touched by an Angel
We, unaccustomed to courage
exiles from delight
live coiled in shells of loneliness
until love leaves its high holy temple
and comes into our sight
to liberate us into life.
Love arrives
and in its train come ecstasies
old memories of pleasure
ancient histories of pain.
Yet if we are bold,
love strikes away the chains of fear
from our souls
We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love’s light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free
