If you’re like me, I’m sure you’re more than tired with recent drama our country is currently going through. From government shut downs, natural disasters, gun violence, raising gas and grocery prices and mental illness, how can anyone put a handle on it?

My main concern is this ongoing issue our country has with mental illness. Is it me or does it seem like we cradle the crazies? You know, “oh well, that’s just crazy Brian over there. He’ll be alright”. Then Brian walks into a school yard or any other public place and shoot it up. After the news cameras are off and the dust settles, the shooter is either dead or in custody in a daze off meds and the community still hasn’t any answers to their questions.

Now’s OUR time to sound off! I thought to put it in a letter! Tell me what you want President Barack Obama and/or Congress to know. Be honest (but respectful) and I will PERSONALLY send it off to The White House. Hopefully it will reach the President and he’ll address ours and many other concerned Americans.

SOUND OFF RIGHT NOW:

Dear Mr. President/Congress:

I know you’re busy handling a lot of issues but can we please urge you GROWN UP’s to make amends and address the issue with mental illness? The recent shooting in Washington, DC. and Naval Yard (amongst other cities) have proven that we have so many people walking the streets with mental illness. My friend has been diagnosed with Bipolar Schizophrenia for 20 years and she doesn’t like to take her medicine because she doesn’t like the way it feels. The law or rules for Western Psychiatric of PA (Pittsburgh, PA) is that if she is a threat to herself or others, then maybe they’ll take her. Who comes up with this stuff?

I’m not a politician nor do I follow politics but I’ll do whatever I can to get you and Congress to pay attention to our loved ones suffering from mental illness. What can WE THE PEOPLE do? We can vote but what do we vote for? Research? Stable laws? What has to happen in order for you to pay attention? I know there is so much going on in this world that deserve your attention, but our country can’t lose any more kindergarten students, teachers, mothers and fathers and veterans and military families on account of mental illness. I am a single mother to a 15 year old young man. I’m afraid everyday that his school will have an incident or I will be out doing a public service for my job  (I work in radio) and someone will hear the wrong thing that triggers something and they decide to take it out on others. I’m an American. I shouldn’t be afraid to walk the streets. From gun violence within our own race to mall shootings this HAS TO STOP! Please sir!

We can’t keep going through this! We can’t keep suffering  Some of us can’t take care of ourselves. We need to rely on the government. We can’t afford healthcare so we’re thankful for the Affordable Health Care program. Now the people can get treatment. We need stronger gun laws. I believe in protecting ourselves and our families, but to an extent! What kind of sport uses an assault rifle or military style machine gun? Who are you trying to kill? Someone with mental illness probably wouldn’t have a criminal record so it’s probably easy to purchase a gun from their local Walmart. I am a community activist that work on programs for young girls (Charm School in the Charm City) and boys (Man Camp) in the Baltimore area.

These are some of the programs that encourage our young men and women to make better choices and be what they want to be, and use the tools that are given to them to make those positive decisions. I can’t tell them to watch out for Brian because he has a mental illness! Or can I? What more can I do? How can we help our loved ones? Give them more medicine? I believe in solutions but I’m stuck here!

I will help out in whatever way I can. I am a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated and I am also a radio announcer. I’m not looking for any glory! I’m not looking for a ribbon or award! I just need a resolution! We just need a resolution! Please help! Please???

Signed,

I will be sending more letters from my listeners who also have a few questions for you.

Thank you for this opportunity!

God bless!
