As a mother of a young black male (teen), I find necessary to make sure that I encourage my son at all times! It’s extremely necessary with so much going on with the crime we hear about daily (if not sooner) on the news.

When was the last time you encouraged a young black man? When was the last time you said “I’m proud of you!” I’m sure some of the young black men that you come into contact with aren’t as welcoming to serve them that comment, so we refrain because we figure “what’s the use”. It’s that very excuse that turns our young people to be de-sensitized, negative and mis-guided.

Interactive One started up an amazing campaign that was created to encourage our young men today to keep them from falling behind and becoming those top news stories we hear about everyday (negative stories). Let’s stop feeling let down and begin to up lift our young men by telling them #YOURLIFEMATTERS! Join the movement here!

Here are more tips on how to motivate young black men: SOURCE

  1. Refrain from using negative stereotypes or statistics in hopes that it will encourage black male teenagers. African-American males are sometimes inundated with statistics regarding their education level, intelligence or lack thereof, and health risks. Being constantly reminded of the statistics can be discouraging.
  2. Offer examples and reminders of black males, younger and older, who have become successful against all odds. Research unknown, successful African-Americans.
  3. Spend more time focusing on the teenager’s strengths instead of weaknesses.
