It’s estimated at almost 20% of Americans will have the flu sometime this season! Many doctor’s offices and emergency rooms are over crowded with sick patients claiming to have flu-like symptoms. One case was reported fatal so it’s really important that you get your flu shot ASAP!
Some folks are a little skeptical about getting the flu shot, so I’m here to rest your pretty little mind about the myths behind the flu shot…as according to ABC News:
Myth: Only the elderly and those at high risk need to be immunized.
Fact: Influenza can make anyone, including the healthiest among us, seriously ill, and even if you don’t develop symptoms yourself, you can pass the virus on to others.
Myth: The flu shot itself can give you a case of the flu.
Fact: The virus used in the vaccine is grown in chicken eggs and killed off before it reaches your bloodstream. There’s absolutely nothing in it capable of causing the flu.
Myth: If I have a cold, I should postpone getting a flu shot.
Fact: As long as you’re not suffering from a major illness or running a temperature higher than 101°F, the flu shot doesn’t present a health risk for you, according to experts.
Here are some common symptoms of the flu virus:
- A 100oF or higher fever or feeling feverish (not everyone with the flu has a fever)
- cough and/or sore throat
- A runny or stuffy nose
- Headaches and/or body aches
- Chills
- Fatigue
- Nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea (most common in children)
