Everybody and their MAMA turned out this weekend for the opening of The Avengers , raking in $200.3 million for the US box office.
That sets a record as the largest debut ever and kicks off the Summer movie-going season in high style.
Overseas, The Avengers opened a week ago, and earned $441.5 million for a worldwide total of $641.8 million — already surpassing the lifetime totals of Captain America: The First Avenger ($364 million), Thor ($449 million), Iron Man ($585 million) and Iron Man 2 ($624 million).
The 3D version is now expected to reach $1 billion in global grosses.
